The joy of being surrounded by cool water on a hot day will be a reality for people of all abilities at the community swimming pool in Algonac. A ramp and lifts will be installed at the pool. A tree house in the center of the 90-acre Pine River Nature Center will be the only publicly owned, universally accessible tree house in Michigan. The tree house will give visitors a bird’s-eye view of the forest and wetlands near the Pine River and can be reached from a handicapped accessible woodland trail, making the tree house experience available to people of all ages and abilities. The Belle River will be made more accessible to people of all abilities through two canoe and kayak launches. One launch will be in the East China Township Park and another will be at the Columbus County Park. The launches also will be test sites for a unique docking system that will allow people with disabilities to independently launch canoes or kayaks. Learn more...
The Community Foundation of St. Clair County has created a new, permanent endowment fund, named Access to Recreation, to allow communities to address accessibility issues for generations to come.
