About Access to Recreation
The Access to Recreation initiative represents the initial steps toward a vision of universal recreation availability across St. Clair County. This initiative will fundamentally reshape the future development of county parks and inland waterways by being a tangible reminder that recreational opportunities shouldn't just be for some, but should be available to all.
"Recreational opportunities shouldn't just be for some, but should be available to all"
All of these projects were completed by July 2010:
- Immerse themselves safely in the refreshing waters of the Algonac community swimming pool through specially engineered equipment and renovations.
- Enjoy on their own the beauty and serenity of St. Clair County's waterways thanks to uniquely designed canoe and kayak launches in Fort Gratiot and St. Clair.
- Experience first-hand the joyful freedom of being in an easily accessible tree house, planned for the Pine River Nature Center near Goodells.
Access to Recreation is an initiative by the W.K. Kellogg Foundation, working through the Community Foundation of St. Clair County and its local partners. Access to Recreation is a matching grant program designed to provide the seed money necessary to turn into reality the vision of universally accessible recreational opportunities.
The initiative will far outlive these initial projects by also providing for an endowment fund and public involvement in the long-term goal of turning St. Clair County's varied natural resources into a welcome destination spot for people of all abilities.
