Art exhibit hails ability to overcome

Walk a mile in someone else's shoes — so goes the old saying. But what if the shoes belong to someone with a physical disability?

The walk definitely becomes harder, especially if that person relies on a cane, walker or wheelchair to get around. Tougher yet, maybe that person cannot walk at all or even see.

Very quickly, one's view or "vantage point" perspective toward another person's situation is bound to change. With this belief, a unique photography exhibit is on display throughout the month of November at Port Huron's Studio 1219.

Appropriately titled "Vantage Point," it is an emotional, thought-provoking display that highlights the challenges faced by people with disabilities in our community.

Through the lens of talented photographers and a professional writer, Vantage Point will tell the story of individuals who overcome seemingly insurmountable obstacles in pursuit of recreational activities most "temporarily" able-bodied people take for granted.

Recreational activities featured include horseback riding, hunting, sailing, going to the beach and even motorized para-sailing.

The Vantage Point exhibit is one in a series of projects funded by the W. K. Kellogg Foundation through the Community Foundation of St. Clair County and its local matching grant partners. Other St. Clair County projects include the Regional Educational Service Agency's Pine River Nature Center Tree House, the Algonac Community Pool and the installation of Accessible Kayak and Canoe Launches.

These projects are only the beginning of a long-term goal of turning St. Clair County into a welcome destination spot for people of all abilities.

To learn more about the Access To Recreation initiative, a public viewing reception with entertainment and refreshments will be Friday from 6 to 9 p.m. at Studio 1219. The evening also will offer a community forum for comments and suggestions.

Anyone wishing to attend this free and fun filled event can contact the Community Foundation of St. Clair County at 984-4761 to reserve their spot.
