Treehouse Takes Root
October 11, 2009
It was hard to tell who was more impressed, the children or the parents.
More than 100 area residents made a "Treehouse Trek" to the treehouse at the Pine River Nature Center as part of an event Saturday.
"We just wanted to let people know it was out here for public use," said Lynn Borg, vice president of the Community Foundation of St. Clair County, which sponsored the event. "We have been getting great feedback; people love it."
The 1,000-square-foot structure is about 40 feet off the ground. It offers views of wetlands and the different layers of the tree canopy. It was completed in October 2008.
It is the first universally accessible treehouse in the state, Borg said.
"It's a beautiful view," Mike Smith, 54, of Kimball said. "It's a perfect spot for it."
Luke Jolly, 8, of St. Clair enjoyed the chance to play on the structure.
"I like it," he said. "I liked how you could see all the leaves."
Jack Monaghan, 6, liked it so much, he wanted one at home.
"I think it's pretty cool," he said. "I have just the tree for it."
But children weren't the only ones to think highly of the treehouse. Many adults took several photographs and commented on how neat it was.
"I was really impressed," Doug Bogen, 60, of Columbus Township said. "It's my childhood dream."
There were two events on Saturday to show off the structure. The first one, sponsored by St. Clair County RESA, provided crafts and snacks for children, while the Community Foundation event included a barbeque, music and a bonfire.
"People seem to really enjoy it," Borg said.
